It’s not unoften to come across doom that doesn’t really do anything new, and, obviously, you can say that about many other bands. But, like everything else, it’s all in the execution. Having a history in the scene that stretches back all the way to the 80s isn’t something that most bands can boast, but it’s with Sorcerer that we’ve gotten a version of that after their reunion success still in full swing. It’s still showing no signs of slowing down with their third full-length album showing off the band at their peak.
There aren’t many times that most if any music labeled as “epic doom metal” where the music actually achieves that first word. Many just add the descriptor on there for a bit of flair to make their music sound much bigger and more enticing to those who haven’t heard it yet, and it’s definitely dragged me into a few underwhelming albums that want to boast the word epic. Without question, “Lamenting of the Innocent” is one of the few that has earned such a description as practically every single track that’s brought forth here does not disappoint in the slightest. You’d be hard-pressed to find something here that doesn’t cater to every variety of doom fan even if not all of the album applies to them all. Sorcerer really went all-in with this album having everything you need for a really flavorful work of this kind from the excellence riffs, tremendous attitude that soaks up all possible glory, a sound that’s very reminiscent of classic doom but still doing its own thing, and quality that is simply undeniable. They achieved just about everything they should’ve with “Lamenting of the Innocent” and it’s well after several listens of this piece that I can’t help but consider this to be their best work to date.
Bringing together all the best pieces of their works over the last few years, Sorcerer has really made something that they should be proud of. This is an incredibly meaty album that has a lot to offer, and epic doom has already found a good home for the year in the form of “Lamenting of the Innocent”.
