Million Moons – I May Be Some Time

As we traverse the many different sides to the vast underground with its vastly different scenes and hundreds of thousands of inhabitants, if not millions, it’s only natural that we get some bands that manage to not just do their style justice but perform it damn near perfectly to really represent a large swathe of what that particular sound is known for and able to deliver. There’s no shortage of talent that’s able to bring glory to the world of post-rock, but it’s not often enough that we see an act rise out of nothingness to put forth a record that is as evocative and atmospheric while never losing an almost childlike sense of wonder to the world unfolding before our eyes. In no small way, Million Moons achieves just that with their sophomore album.

For all that can be done with a little bit of atmosphere, it’s not always something that bands are able to take into consideration properly with far too many sacrificing it for another aspect of their sound. Post-rock has always been good for more than just some notions towards the ethereal and otherworldly with bands like Million Moons certainly able to take that concept and run with it quite well, but it is here within the seven pieces of “I May Be Some Time” that we’re able to bear witness to post-rock unfettered where the style is truly able to stretch its legs. Inspired by the unfortunate fate of an Antarctic expedition that led to no one returning home with the very title itself taken from the last words of Captain Oates, “I am just going outside and may be some time”, this is a record that is just as beautiful to the soul as it is harrowing to the flesh. The very soundscapes that crafted here are simply mesmerizing with Million Moons constantly showing us the otherworldly majesty of the ice continent while showing the human experience within the wasteland with the only thing keeping explorers forward is the natural human spirit to discover and surmount seemingly impossible odds, and it’s all brought to life gorgeously throughout the entire record!

With more than enough capacity to deliver much of what post-rock has long been hailed for, the expansive, colorful, and evocative nature of “I May Be Some Time” is always in a constant full swing as Million Moons does a spectacular job at not just propelling their personal sonic evolution light years forward, but showing us that post-rock is still something that has a ton to offer when it’s being delivered by hands that are the definition of capable. Even as there’s tons of talent to sift through in a scene that is by no means lacking, Million Moons shines incredibly bright with all that it’s able to be in this captivating album.
