Fu Manchu – The Return of Tomorrow

Even as we find ourselves in a time where many legends are throwing in the towel for all sorts of different reasons, there are still legions of big names out there that are able to deliver on the same level whether or not some of us can admit it. Some of these icons are much more widespread for one reason or another with each style having its own particular set that are able to deliver that exact kind of excellence at a constant high level. For all things related to stoner rock, the list is quite expansive. A true menagerie of names graces that list with all sorts still managing to deliver glory on a scale that is just pure bliss. Having been one of those names for a long time, Fu Manchu’s sound has become pivotal to the sound as we know it today with each new record offering a new glimpse into mastery. Their fourteenth album proves to be no different.

A band like Fu Manchu needs no introduction of any kind. Each member has gone on to become part of other massive names in many different veins of rock music to become pillars of the sound in their own right with Fu Manchu being the constant that they always seem to return to sooner or later. After several albums across multiple decades with a reputation like this, Fu Manchu has really earned the right to do damn near anything they want as it’s all but guaranteed to have their shine of excellence upon whatever it is they dish out. Seeking to bring things forth in a big way for their fourteenth record, “The Return of Tomorrow” is the first double album from Fu Manchu with all the precision, finesse, and craftsmanship that one could ask for. The first LP that brings forth seven tracks of hook-laced, hard-hitting rock that packs a real wallop while always making damn sure to be intoxicating of the highest order before the second LP sees Fu Manchu yet again slow things down for six tracks which show of the band’s trademark psychedelia-woven riffs that know precisely how to transport you to a realm where only Fu Manchu can ever take us. There are those that are able to bring excellence into the style that they’ve chosen, but others are able to continuously impress no matter the circumstances. Hands down, Fu Manchu continues to be just such a legend.

For all that Fu Manchu has achieved in the scene to bring us to where we are today, a work like “The Return of Tomorrow” simply shouldn’t be a surprise by any stretch. Every opportunity for excellence was seized at each turn without fail with it still not likely that this absolute pillar of stoner rock is not going anywhere any time soon.
