Sarcoughagus – Remnants

All things considered, I think it’s safe to say that the very state of old school death metal in the modern landscape of the underground cannot be seen as anything less than unrestricted in its prosperity. We live in a time where death metal is giving all sorts of representations be it through the perpetuation of its classic veins of constantly pushing the sound to new heights with the former seeming to have such spirit that it’s likely to never truly go away so long as people have something to say about it. We see new acts spring up all the time to show us what the style is still capable of even after all this time. Some aren’t able to stack up to expectations, though, but it’s with acts like Sarcoughagus that we’re lucky enough to have a constant and consistent stream of excellence.

While it can be argued that much of the modern bands don’t bring a whole lot to the table when it comes to the old school sound given that the whole point of the style in today’s terms is to perpetuate the sound since it has long been perfected by several bands over the years. That can easily lead to a stale sound that doesn’t have any sort of life or significant energy in the wrong hands, but there are still plenty throughout the underground that are able to prove themselves time after time to be immensely capable in the task to tremendous effect. Sarcoughagus has only been around for a few years, but it’s clear they’re not messing around for so much as a second with “Remnants”. The combined experience of this trio speaks volumes and goes to show off their understanding of the underground at every turn with their particular brand of death metal exceedingly deadly, immensely potent from the beginning, and absolutely horrific to look upon in the best way possible. It’s a relatively simplistic approach when everything is taken into account, and it must be said that “Remants” leaves nothing on the table in ways of disappointment or unfulfilled glory through immense violence and true knowledge of that sound that many throughout the underground hope to ascertain one day with few able to achieve this level of the craft.

Where many have sought to keep the old school alive through various different testaments of intensity and reverence, Sarcoughagus comes out on top as a clear victor that is not to be denied in any form. No new ground has been broken with this release and Sarcoughagus surely still has many more dastardly tools in their repertoire of gory insanity, yet all that’s brought forth within “Remnants” is not something to take lightly.
