Leaving – Liminal

Oftentimes do we see plenty of acts come around trying to bring some sense of atmosphere to metal with there always being varying levels of success even when we’re dealing within the veins that tend to have more luck in the matter. Even then, some of the more nuanced styles can leave something to be desired as it can sometimes feel as though there’s no soul or impact within the material in question even if there’s more than enough space. As such, plenty of performances come back lacking and feeling hollow. A more recent act to come upon the scene of doomgaze, Leaving is already showing off its promise in absolute spades.

Whereas many tend to think of shoegaze as the epitome of what it means to take your music to slow and ethereal lengths that lead to experiences that can be likened to very few others, doomgaze is a sound that demands to be recognized and expanded upon. The sheer potential that’s to be found within the sound at any given minute is enough to leave me baffled as I truly do not understand how more have not sought out this sound with doom and post metal coming together for a unique creation that is quite unlike much else of what’s to be had in the vast spectrum of metal. With all that was delivered within the six tracks of “Liminal”, Leaving does far more than simply embody the title itself. For the virtual entirety of this creation, Leaving seeks to transport you to a world between the realms where we can leave this plane behind to wander in one without form. Tackling themes of what torments the human psyche, “Liminal” brings forth a surprising heaviness that is the perfect counterpart to the pure light that Leaving weaves with spectacular competency to ensure that this record does not become one-dimensional while it’s the emotional aspect of the work that continuously brings depth to the table. This is unlike much of what’s come across my desk in recent times with this being a gorgeous work that is constantly shifting – ebbing and flowing – to draw you ever further into its depths where “Liminal” can truly work its magic and the name of Leaving is seared into your mind.

There is more than enough room for new names to crop up in the realm of doomgaze to bring real glory and splendor to the mix where others have failed, and Leaving is already well on the path to do just that. Each of these members have already accomplished much in numerous other acts which makes “Liminal” a record that was almost destined to succeed, yet the magnitude of the work has not waned one bit in spite of that. Hypnotic and deep on every level, this is a work that is meant to be experienced on a spiritual level.
