Daytripper – Book I: The Trip

To sift through all that the modern landscape of doom metal has to offer is to wade through an immense ocean of talent, power, heaviness, and atmosphere with all of those components changing from one band to the next. There so much to offer for just one listener in the scene as a whole, and it would be a gross understatement to claim that there are bands new and old that continue to follow through on that potential to not only keep people coming back, but continuously show us how much there is still to be done within the worlds of doom. With their brand new debut album, Daytripper certainly earns the right to be named one of doom’s most promising up-and-coming acts.

From the very first time you gaze upon that cover art, Daytripper already has you by the throat. This isn’t some easy, carefree drive through the desert with a couple of riffs to make for a good time. Rather, Daytripper ensures from the very first minute that you step into “Book I: The Trip” that you are in for a real doom metal experience that holds nothing back in the trippiness of their music while the driving force is well and truly the patient heaviness that knows how to takes its time and the most opportune moment to strike. Armed with lengthy compositions to really allow their drawn-out riffs to breathe and take their terrible shape to tremendous effect, “The Trip” is a titanically potent record that holds nothing back and isn’t afraid whatsoever to show the listener just how adept Daytripper already is at their sound despite this being their debut album. That simple fact alone is enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand straight up. If this is what Daytripper is capable of out of the gate, one cannot help but shudder what can be accomplished with the simple gift of time. “The Trip” is utterly devilish in its intoxications with the very smoke of the land playing a big part in the overarching lore that holds this record together, and it needs to be said at every possible turn that Daytripper surpasses any and every expectation one may have had before stepping into this powerful record.

Many have done their best to make an impactful debut onto the scene to varying effect, but it is here with every one of these seven tracks that Daytripper makes a bold entrance that cannot easily be turned down, denied, or ignored in any capacity. For all that was brought forth from the summoning within “Book I: The Trip”, defeat was certainly not one of them.
