It’s no secret that the intersecting realms of heaviness and psychedelia have made for some of the most memorable and intoxicating works of music that both metal and rock music have seen in years virtually without exception. We could sit here for days and go over all the different names that have crossed our paths and delivered greatness on levels that were previously unheard pf with few before or since able to deliver such magnificence. As such, there are throngs of rising names out there that are striving to make their mark upon the scene or those who seek to continue a streak of excellence in the sound. When it comes to Elk Witch, their rise has been indisputable with their newest record only cementing that.
Despite only having risen from nothingness just five years ago with their first full-length coming out in but 2021, it would be an understatement to say that Elk Witch is far from the biggest name in this particular corner of the underground that has so much to offer for those who are constantly seeking greatness. Homing in on their potential and delivering in spades, “Azimuth” sees the Oregon act swiftly rise to the occasion to not only just show us what they’re already made of, but the immense role that they’re showing signs of growing into. Nine hypnotic tracks that put forth a display of understanding of their craft to a terrific degree, this is what it means to begin the path to fulfilling your destiny to dramatic effect such that none can deny your potency. Riffs abound and more than enough gorgeous landscape that shifts to the very tone of the strings, “Azimuth” rides much of the same lines that we’ve all seen over the years with this sound, but in no way does that mean Elk Witch isn’t putting forth tremendous game for the very whole of their sophomore piece. A gorgeous homage to the style for all that it’s always been and something that is sure to stand gloriously against the test of time as a pivotal work that rightfully puts Elk Witch center stage for success.
Straightforward but still a work that builds off the excellence that’s always lying underneath the surface when concerning a sound like this, Elk Witch has done nothing but conquer with this massive step forward in their evolution. There’s plenty to uncover within the vast forest that ebbs and flows to give us an experience that’s simply intoxicating to lose yourself in with Elk Witch a brilliant vessel to bring that about. For all that they’ve shown us thus far, “Azimuth” brings glory to the very name of Elk Witch.
