Qilin – Parasomnia

Already, 2024 has been blessed in the ways of quality doom metal with the instrumental reaches of the sound being particularly bountiful thanks to the likes of Clouds Taste Satanic, Mountain Caller, and Black Sky Giant. Every single one of those have been bastions of what happens when the sound is taken to new voiceless regions with no less than a staggering level of class, and there is always room for more talent to be had with such a promising style. It was four years ago that Qilin took its first steps into the sound, but it is now with their second offering that they really show us what they’re made of with it absolutely earning the band enough praise to be hailed for greatness right alongside those aforementioned.

Of all the different styles throughout the vast spectrum of metal, doom has got to be one of the best paired with instrumentalism simply because of how varied the sound can be at the mere flick of a wrist and all that can be done with it even after decades of experimentation and exploration. Clearly, Qilin understood that simple truth with every given step of their new creation, “Parasomnia”, offering us some of the most ideal excellence when we bear witness to instrumental doom metal being allowed to stretch its legs. No matter what moment you find yourself at within the immense seven tracks, Qilin is more than up to the task of bringing everything forth with exquisite quality be it in the form of intoxicating riffs or sprawling expanses that are simply gorgeous to look upon. For all that’s possible within this sound, “Parasomnia” brings virtually all of it to magnificent light be it in the form of immense psychedelia, uncompromising heaviness, and everything in between to ensure that the listener is not given a one-dimensional piece. Rather, Qilin goes out of its way to deliver a performance that from beginning to end cannot be understated for the excellence that is constantly and consistently brings to the table in magnificent fashion to make “Parasomnia” not just one of the more interesting and engaging creations of instrumental doom in 2024, but in recent times in general.

Fortunately, it already seems to be the case that “Parasomnia” has caught on with the masses to earn Qilin more than a little bit of well-earned acclaim. For all that they’ve brought forth in immense fashion, Qilin has really astounded at every turn with “Parasomnia” to establish their claim as a band we simply need to keep a sharp eye on with the very quality of their work something that should instantly make one excited.
