There is nothing that can ever truly compare to the likes of straightforward death metal done right. It’s the sort of sound that is nigh-on undeniable in virtually every aspect without question, and there is always more than enough of it to go around for everybody to get their fill in many times over. The question comes down to the quality of such. Premium death metal is something that can often feel few and far between by many accounts, and when one qualifying work does come around it’s almost always a cause for immense excitement throughout the underground. For all that it brings to the table, Baron more than meets the requirements for such rejoice with its first full-length album.
Taking a couple of pages from the world of doom metal to ensure that there’s plenty of darkness along the way for maximum effect, what Baron accomplishes here within these seven tracks is a breed of Finnish death metal that I think many of us can get behind without even thinking about it. Even for those of us who want a little bit more, “Beneath the Blazing Abyss” has you covered many times over. More than living up to the fiery cover art, this album is ferocious death metal of a like that is immensely infectious right from the beginning as driving riffs and an immense presence are what you’re met with in the first moments of the record while it’s through their own flavors of personality and the drive to really bring a true sense of scorching oblivion into the fold that Baron manages to really deliver the red-hot goods. This is far more than a collection of simple riffs and some intensity to barely qualify as death metal. Rather, everything about “Beneath the Blazing Abyss” demands to be called death metal of extreme quality. Even well unto the ominous outro that leaves an indelible stain upon the very purity of the soul, Baron knew precisely what it was doing every step along the way in the crafting of this magnificent titan of an album. Finnish death metal done exceedingly competent and more than enough firepower to match, how can one resist the flames with which Baron wields with absolute impunity?
Oftentimes, it can feel as though death metal leans more towards its progressive tendencies to send us sprawling into crazy territories the style is still very much exploring, but there’s more than enough glory to be had within the reaches where all we need is a little bit of talent and passion towards the old way to be presented with an experience that’s simply intoxicating. Right from the beginning, Baron ensures that “Beneath the Burning Abyss” is a work that more than meets that criteria with the very essence of the record simply undeniable.
