It’s always great to have a plan as a band when you find yourselves coming away from your debut album especially when it comes to what direction you want to take your sound with anything being possible whether it is a surprise left turn that no one could have expected or simply doubling down on the sound that you laid forth in that initial effort. Dimwind’s debut was promising to say the least, and it was with their sophomore effort after releasing a split with Breaths last year that the Swedish duo sought to explore the themes of grief and the loss of a loved one. The universe, however, turned things such that those themes became all too real with the ensuing catharsis that bled into this record making for a performance that’s as tragic as it is heavy in every thematic possibility.
Without having to even think about it, grief is something that we all know all too well in some form or another for any given reason. It’s a universal emotion that every adult has experienced in excruciating detail with music always being a place where such sorrows can find just as much relief for as much as it can be a reminder of the darker days. When stepping into the sophomore album of “The Futility of Breathing” you really get the sensation of genuine sorrow, pain, and loss within these six tracks such that every moment is leaking with those emotions as Dimwind not only executes it all with tragic know-how, but the very whole of the record stands as a magnificent progression from the band’s debut from just two years ago. An ethereal core that is never afraid to venture into darker territory that reaches multiple different levels of what it means to be heavy, this is an album that should be able to touch the very soul of all who comes into contact with it be it because of the undeniable quality that Dimwind has brought forth to bring the album together, the power it has in damn near every capacity, or the very sensation of being able to drift away from much of what weighs you down in this world. Many have poured their souls out into order to bring such creations into existence in magnificent form with “The Futility of Breathing” a fitting creation of such that is as weighty and heart-wrenching as one could possibly ask for.
A record like this is not something that can be easily dismissed be it for the real-world pain that was the tragic inspiration for what’s at play here or the undeniable craftsmanship that helped build the record into what it is, and I still cannot get over how it is from Dimwind that I’m seeing it come from with this being but the band’s second full-length effort. There is much to discover within the depths of “The Futility of Breathing” for one reason or another with its messages and spells more than enough for anyone to draw likeness towards with the very air of Dimwind making it one that’s not easy to shake the soul from.
“The Futility of Breathing” releases on April 21st!
