It should go without saying that if we were to look towards the news or even a simple walk outside of our doors will show us that the world in truly in a state of turmoil the likes of which maybe comes around once in a century, and it has truly done a number on humanity’s psyche as a whole. Right alongside such an obvious statement, music as a whole has already covered in great detail in virtually every style what the pandemic has done to our lives no matter how large or small its effects were for us on a person to person level. However, that doesn’t mean that’s all there is to say. Rather than keeping their eyes on the present woes we face, it’s with a provocative and engorging split from Dimwind and Breaths that our gaze looks nervously towards the future.
Now, more than ever, this is a time that we need to be looking towards our future and those who will follow us after we come to the other side of such a global event that took many years to pass through which isn’t even truly over yet. It’s all but tempting to keep your thoughts worried in the now, but what’s to come is now a bigger question than ever and is something that needs to be talked about all over. They are but two voices adding to that global, multi-generational conversation, but it’s with the creation of “Seasons” that both Dimwind and Breaths make a poignant creation that doesn’t hold anything back and keeps everything almost depressingly real. An effective pairing of two different styles brought together for an immensely potent listen, both Dimwind’s instrumental post-metal approach with Breaths’ undeniable take on blackgaze makes for a fascinating contrast that shows us two sides of the same coin as we look towards the future: optimistic hope and nihilistic doubt. This is a match made for this exact kind of creation with each band playing off the other almost staggeringly well as the themes are driven home right from the opening dialogue and driving notes all the way to the final fading notes that leaves the heart hoping for the best but the mind worrying for the worst – an apt state for one to be in with the state of things. And, yet, there’s still a thread of certifiable light to be found throughout the very whole of “Seasons” as both bands do their best to make the best out of what’s before them, but it’s only together that we can all make such a reality come about.
The streak of glorious splits that I’ve been fortunate enough to witness in recent months is only furthered by this magnificent creation with both Dimwind and Breaths pulling off far more than we could’ve hoped for out of them with such a collaboration like this as the final result is the very definition of relevant, compelling, and downright engaging in the best ways possible. There’s nothing that can go wrong with a dip into what “Seasons” has to offer, but it’s even then that there’s but one question after it’s all said and done: will you rally to the bands’ call to action for the sake of the future?
