Revulsion – s/t

A worthwhile debut isn’t quite like anything else where the scene as a whole has not previous expectations whatsoever about whatever the band may be of any style even if the band’s members are all well known. It’s the closest thing to a blank slate that you can ever get as a musician, and it’s with many debuts that several promising bands have made one fantastic splash after another. The seething underground of Scandinavia is something that will never cease to be beyond fruitful in every capacity, and it’s with bands like REvulsion that we see it come to a glorious head.

Finnish death metal is truly something else entirely, isn’t it? It’s a style that has been peaked for what’s undoubtedly been decades now, and there’s no lack of any bands that bring justice to what the style’s reputation has become, but there are extremely few that can elevate the style somehow even higher. While Revulsion may not exactly be raising the bar for what the Finns are capable of, but there’s no way to deny that what’s done on their eponymous debut is no less than earth-shattering. With the core of this release being riffs for days and an unquestionable nastiness paired with a tremendous lack of mercy in every inch of what they brought forth in these ten tracks, Revulsion has done an outstanding job by all accounts whether you’re taking into consideration the musicianship, the loyalty to the style that the band wields with shocking deadliness, flavor that is no less than tantalizing in every instance, and brutal on a level that is all but undeniable. The cover art depicts a whirling storm of absolute chaos and destruction which is a fitting image for what Revulsion brings to the table here, but this work is more akin to a seething worm; a borer that does its evil work deep into your skull such that it refuses to leave even hours after that initial venture into this self-titled work that is downright the epitome of infectious. It shows us the rotting work of Revulsion for what it truly is: dark, seductive, and massive in every possible way.

It’d be a bold and foolish statement for me to even think about claiming 2021 to already being off to an awesome start singularly because of what has been done here, but there’s no way for me to deny the significance of what Revulsion has crafted here. In every form, it is a debut worth hailing beyond exception as Revulsion constantly and consistently delivers on a level that is applause-worthy by all accounts in every single song.
