Given the sheer nature of the underground to replicate itself while simultaneously seeking new avenues to venture down, it’s only a matter of time before we’re given an act that taps into something that may not necessarily be brand new and wildly different, but certainly something that feels extremely fresh. Combined with passion and talent, such things can spread like wildfire. We’ve seen such a phenomenon every so often across the vast expanse of what the metal spectrum is capable of. From my beloved mountains of West Virginia, Horseburner has been cultivating such a sensation with their forthcoming piece their most refined, intense, and engaging work yet.
It’s already enough of a struggle for a band to find their own sound and become adept at it. It’s another to truly evolve your craft into a formidable beast that few are able to come close to with all that you bring to the table oftentimes the exact material that makes people turn their heads in fascination and surprise. In no small way, Horseburner has been doing that for quite some time. Since their debut fifteen years ago, Horseburner has brought forth a tremendous blend of stoner, progressive, and sludge metal that has enabled them to not just stand out, but become a name that demands respect. Their last album saw that simple truth comes to light in force, but it’s here with “Voice of Storms” that Horseburner has blossomed into a truly magnificent act the likes of which simply cannot be denied! A real powerhouse of a record with nine electrifying tracks that sees the absolute entirety of Horseburner’s capabilities put on full display, this is a creation that ebbs and flows wildly to bring forth an experience that few are able to deliver in such quality and power that’s nothing of amazingly potent. “Voice of Storms” is positively overflowing with fantastic riffs that pull you ever deeper into the realm that Horseburner holds complete dominion over with a high-energy approach that effortlessly incorporates psychedelics, heaviness, atmosphere, and hypnotic rhythms to make for a work that feels the image of what it means to be eclectic. There are weapons in this arsenal that many bands just don’t have with Horseburner aptly wielding them in practically every given instance.
Where there was much to consider and loads to tackle, Horseburner approached it all with real finesse and mastery to make “Voice of Storms” the expansive creation that it promises right from the beginning. Bombastic and and downright intoxicating even in its smallest moments, “Voice of Storms” has the potential to really capture listeners on a scale Horseburner has never achieved before.
