Culto Negro – La Noche Oscura del Alma

Not often enough do the combined realms of black and thrash metal find themselves in the limelight. It’s such an obvious combination the likes of which can make for something of the most eviscerating and scathing metal that we could ever ask for, but it’s much like all areas of extreme promise that it can feel as though truly substantial acts can appear quite sparingly. It makes for a real head-scratcher given all the obvious talent that’s out there, making me wonder if I always find myself looking in the wrong places? Tonight, however, I found myself fortunate enough to be in the perfect location with the first full-length from a Costa Rican act providing me with excellence that I haven’t heard in such quality since the latest from Warfist or even Oxygen Destroyer.

This is absolutely one of those sounds where simplicity can very easily triumph over all without question. Yet, it’s something that not many are truly able to get a good handle on for one reason or another, but it’s such that whenever a quality performance does manage to come around it makes for a performance that all are meant to hear with the masses more than happy to spread any and all word about the material given the opportunity. Given that, I would be immensely disappointed in the scene should the very whole of “La Noche Oscura del Alma” go unheralded for the greatness that Culto Negro manages to achieve in these eleven tracks with a tasteful Hermetica cover an interesting detail despite being on the lower end of wonders that are to be had here. There isn’t a single shred of this album that was designed to be made as one of the more exquisite creations the black and thrash metal, but, rather, a nasty effort that leaves nothing to chance with the very fabric of reality tearing at the awesome speed with which Culto Negro operates at for the undeniable entirety of the record. Every ounce of what’s been brought forth here for “La Noche Oscura del Alma” is of a special vein of its sound that is not to be denied in any form for all that it manages to bring forward and deliver in such quality that can’t be seen as anything short of mouth-watering as it’s by the fading notes of this album that Culto Negro makes their presence more than known with the future truly their’s for the taking.

Efforts like this grab my attention like few others for it really does make me wonder what else the band in question is capable of given the excellence that has been put forth, and I can’t help but find myself in that very position when considering Culto Negro and all that they put forth here. It would be a stretch to say that “La Noche Oscura del Alma” is a complex creation in many forms, but it’s with that straightforward approach and a die-hard attitude that this band has found undeniable success with more than plenty of room to improve upon this already-delicious sound.
