When we go into the very hall of fame for death metal, it’s not hard to come across a long list of names, we come upon roughly twenty-ish names from that classic era which were all but integral in making the scene what it is today for one reason or another. Whether it’s from the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, or Exhumed, the very old school of death metal is still viciously resilient in more ways than one. When Autopsy returned to us what was over ten years ago now, it really did feel like a revival of one of those bands that truly helped sculpt the modern form of death metal with all of their new material continuously showing us what excellence there is still to be done with the sound. Evidently, their work still isn’t done quite yet.
While it’s always tempting to write off a band like Autopsy as an obvious success before listening to the album in question given the band’s legacy and influence, but the crushing reality of a potential stumble of a record is always something that we must prepare for, no matter how great the band may be. Fortunately, though, when it comes to the eleven tracks and 41 minutes of “Morbidity Triumphant” cannot be seen as anything short of a creation that is far more than worthy of being added to the acclaimed discography that Autopsy has carefully crafted for themselves over the decades. Even with their immense level of expertise and clear understanding of what makes death metal the intoxicating treat of flesh and bone that it is, we’re lucky enough to never once be subjected to a pretentious creation that puts on any facade of any kind to trick the listener with some polished or immensely refined breed of death metal that has a sheen that leads to naught but a feeling of inauthenticity. For its absolute entirety, “Morbidity Triumphant” is as glorious now as it would be if it were to have been released thirty to forty years ago for how slimy, nasty, and unforgiving every second of this intentional torture is right from the get-go with Autopsy all but one of the perfect vessels to deliver such a magnificent performance that leaves nothing to chance, no survivors left to howl, or any plot of dirt unquenched with blood. This is death metal as it’s always been in its best forms: simple, eviscerating, and no less than downright murderous.
When a band like this manages to keep that classic vision and spirit going strong for so long, it is practically at every turn that a true spectacle is made for the listener as not only does it tend to result in magnificence virtually right out of the gate, but that excellence is only further gloriously. For Autopsy, I don’t think anything could have gone better to make “Morbidity Triumphant” the modern embodiment of their spirit that we could’ve asked for.
