The Mist From the Mountains – Monumental – The Temple of Twilight

A black metal record that draws from the very fabric of nature itself is far from an anomaly in our current climate for many different reasons, and it can effortlessly feel as though we’re drowning in throngs of bands that attempt such a very commonly used theme. Yet, somehow there are loads of bands to enjoy out of such bands despite it being absolutely overcrowded in virtually every way with the very odds of quality seeming like they diminish every day even though there are plenty coming out of the woodwork to constantly show us just how awesome the theme and sound can still be when in hands that are capable. With their debut effort, it’s clear right from the beginning that The Mist From the Mountains is more than up to the task with six tracks that sum up a large swathe of the sound immensely well.

When you’re going for a well-worn sound that thousands upon thousands of albums before your’s have accomplished, there tends to be a significant bar set before you that can feel intimidatingly high even if there are some out there that could break the very sound down to an efficient formula that you wouldn’t even have to think about when crafting it. In the case of The Mist From the Mountains, it feels downright natural with how it came to them but especially how the band executes it in such a fashion that cannot be considered anything other than exquisite. Virtually every cue that was taken in the creation of this record can be seen as a template for what can be done should any band decide to come out of literally nowhere and smash the sound on their very first effort without fail as it’s with just six works across 38 minutes that “Monumental – The Temple of Twilight” makes a tremendous impression that’s as flavorful as it is well-executed. When you simply allow this effort to wash over yourself, you can really get the sensation of sitting amongst the ancient rocks at the peak of long-forgotten mountains where only the spirits reside and only nature will remain after any supposed lords over the earth pass with the blessing and curse of time with a soothing mist crawling over your skin as “The Temple of Twilight” progresses to quickly become a work that isn’t just something that can simply be written off as yet another work in the nature-inspired realm of atmospheric black metal that we’ve seen loads of times before. Rather, it’s on their very first effort that The Mist From the Mountains keeps the sound feeling wondrously fresh with six pieces of quality that cannot be denied.

Such a work like this is what will always keep me interesting in what this particular corner of black metal with a true plethora of acts to choose from in the current climate of the scene that we find ourselves in, and it’s in part because of that which I cannot help but feel compelled by what The Mist From the Mountains has conjured up for this release. With “Monumental – The Temple of Twilight” as the first demonstration of what they can really do, I’m beyond intrigued to know what else this band can execute if just given the time to really harness their talent and potential.

“Monumental – The Temple of Twilight” releases on January 28th!
