When we get an entry that spans both of the endlessly vicious worlds that are death and black metal, it’s more often than not that we’re greeted with a sonic assault that feels complex yet no less than barbaric even with the plethora of different forms that the sound can effortlessly transform into. A straightforward march with riffs aplenty alongside musicianship that always keeps you guessing is far from a rarity in the merging styles, but when it’s done well there’s nothing else quite like it. On their upcoming opus, it cannot be stressed enough just how well Vahrzaw has prepared for this bloody excursion.
Whenever I think of bands in this vein, my brain cannot help but focus on acts that manage to really devastate in every form with their music being the very definition of vicious from acts like Malgöth and Ars Magna Umbrae with truly exceptional pieces like Esoctrilihum being an immensely rare but welcome case. But where simplicity and intimidating complexity go, it’s with “The Trembling Voices of Conquered Men” that Vahrzaw strikes a very alluring middle-ground. Never once do any of these seven tracks that are bookended by an acoustic that feels both decompressing and anxiety-inducing somehow feel as though Vahrzaw is content to give the listener just one end of the spectrum of extremes. Rather, it’s the band’s undeniable effectiveness and staggering efficiency at delivering ferocious riffs coupled with truly compelling musicianship that is all but perfect for when death and black metal meet in such a concentrated form as “The Trembling Voices of Conquered Men” is just as malicious as it is unrelenting and alluring in its engrossing riffs as it is horrifying in its imagery. No one is left alive in the wake of this gory assault as Vahrzaw leaves nothing but unrecognizable viscera behind them with the all-consuming brutality of this creation speaking volumes for all that Vahrzaw is to create, but it remains far from the only trick that they can pull off with the very whole of this album showing us that this rising act is one that’s not to be underestimated and one whose power cannot be ignored lest the foolish find themselves utterly annihilated by all that these Australians can create.
One may claim to experience many works the likes of which Vahrzaw has made here, and I would challenge anyone who would say that for that would be to mean that we are constantly getting albums like this that really define what the sound can be to its very core as the band in question both falls into the style’s tropes as much as it carves its own path. Every facet of “The Trembling Voices of Conquered Men” is something to be greatly respected from the very start without exception with it being all but superbly compelling as Vahrzaw do an immaculate job with their visceral and constantly shifting sound.
