The eternal waves of psychedelia are the likes of which I wish to surf forever, and if you know anything about me then you know my love for that ethereal excellence in an instrumental form is some of my favorite kinds of music by far with it feeling like every other band that puts something out qualifies as stupendous. But, at what point is it just me not being critical enough? Honestly, I couldn’t tell you off the top of my head even as I went into the latest offering from ShiMa ready to pick it apart with how well their first effort four years ago went, but it is at every possible turn throughout “Vol.02” that this Portuguese act has expanded their talent almost exponentially.
I still regard the first album from ShiMa, “Vol.01”, as one of my favorite finds from the depths of Bandcamp that I don’t listen to enough. With tons of influence being brought in from all over the style on top of the drive to create something that they can call their own, ShiMa has remained an act to keep an eye on even if they’re not the most unique or even bombastic in their particular vein of psychedelia, but that didn’t stop them from blowing that first work right out of the fucking water with everything that “Vol.02” brings to the table in ashamed heaps. More so than before, this 5-track album that clocks in just under an hour runtime is an ensemble work that brings together all the different flavors that make ShiMa a powerhouse to begin with as the talent and tenacity of the band really drive home the quality that is prevalent at all times throughout the utterly infectious material. We’re thrown across the worlds of progressive instrumentation, stoner glory filled with all sorts of hypnotism, an epic that meets somewhere in the middle that shows us what ShiMa is truly capable of, and top-tier musicianship the likes of which cannot be overthrown, denied, or stopped with every single feasible inch of “Vol.02” a grossly entertaining album that any fan of psychedelia should immediately drop everything to go investigate for it is a trip that won’t soon be forgotten.
We could sit here all day and talk about psych bands that are worth mentioning for one reason or another, and it is with “Vol.02” that I am more positive than ever that ShiMa deserves a mention in any conversation of such for it has everything needed in a fucking spectacular work that sticks in the mind, and I know for a fact that I’ll be crawling back to this awesome work for quite some time. There are many bands hidden within the unending layers of Bandcamp, and if you dig deep enough to discover bands like ShiMa then you should consider yourself immensely fortunate.
