It’s every now and then that we get an album that really does challenge my previous conception of what I thought I was getting myself into, and it’s pretty much every single time that I find myself enjoying having my expectations subverted in such fashion. Often, it leads to a damn good time with an album that slowly builds itself up to become much more than a simple work of any given style to the point that I cannot help but fall ever further into the excellence that I find myself in. With Stortregn, that couldn’t be any more true.
When it comes to Stortregn, I really figured that I was in for some “run-of-the-mill” tech-death, as if there’s anything run-of-the-mill about that style. The single that lured me in was fantastic by all accounts with there being brief excursions into different styles that only further enhanced the sound that Stortregn was bringing to the table for the entirety of the song, and I figured that it was just something done in the single hence why it was picked to be our teaser. But, that couldn’t be any further from the truth. In reality, the absolute entirety of “Impermanence” runs with that idea on an Olympic level to enable these eight tracks to become a blistering experience that’s constantly shifting from technical death metal, speedy black metal that’s blended perfectly with the death elements, the occasional dash of old school heavy metal, and grand progressive overtones that all come together to make “Impermanence” dynamic on a devastating level. There’s so much to dive into with any given song that’s to be had on the album that it’s still hard for me to comprehend, but when it comes to that swirling black hole of bone, dust, and, surely, some form of oblivion, I cannot help but suggest we all take a collective dive for the prospects and rewards are truly wondrous. It’s ever-expanding with such a menacing march forward that never once staggers nor falters in any form whether it be quality, presence, or performance to help “Impermanence” rise above the competition with such grandeur that it’s all but irresistible should you find yourself lost in Stortregn’s storm which I cannot express enough how great an idea that is.
Everything that’s related to technical death metal, even loosely, has experienced unprecedented and exponential growth in recent years, but I feel confident in saying that Stortregn has taken it to another level with their dynamic sound that constantly keeps you guessing, enthralled and sore from whiplash in the best possible way. “Impermanence” stands tall amongst so much of the competition by sheer domination of talent and ambition, and to say it has resulted in a creation that is more than worthy of every accolade it may receive would be to undermine what’s truly happening within this massive effort.
“Impermanence” releases on March 12th via The Artisan Era!
