It’s not terribly often that I find myself listening to metalcore nowadays and much less the vast majority of djent that the world has to offer, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything from across the scene that has no value for me to get into. It’s taken a while, but it’s in the form of their latest effort that Wazmo has created something that I can really sink my teeth into despite having a few bumps along the way.
The main thing that catches attention when listening to “Insight” is how truly eclectic it is in its entirety, almost shockingly so. There have been many albums that I’ve heard that taken innovation to another in many different forms whether it be grand heaviness and psychedelia like Inter Arma or next level folk metal like Whispered, but I’ve never really seen it done with metalcore or djent on a level like this where you just feel so overwhelmed by the variety that Wazmo constantly throws at your face. I’d be remiss to say that Wazmo didn’t do a surprisingly good job from track to track as they delivered new sounds one after another virtually without fail and with no hesitation. That said, “Insight” does feel clunky at times which I feel is only to be expected whenever a band decides to cast as wide of a net as they do like what’s done here, but that doesn’t take away from what Wazmo has accomplished here. It’s unconventional in just about every sense and it’s with a great sense of adventure along with the desire to create music that the band can be really proud of that Wazmo quickly enables “Insight” to become a unique creation that doesn’t abide by traditional genre lines in order to take on a life of its own.
They still have a very long way to go before really becoming something that is worth going crazy over, but there’s no doubt that Wazmo absolutely has the seeds of excellence sewn throughout their ambitious sound. “Insight” stands out purely when it comes to its bold nature especially when compared to much of the rest of the scene, and it’s in many other areas that it finds success no matter how much or how little.
