It’s the ever-expanding realm of atmospheric black metal that is constantly showing us just what lengths the style can be taken to, and it should be all but obvious to see the growth that the style has gone through in this decade alone. We’ve seen loads of tremendous new bands sprout up out of seemingly nowhere to deliver us works that are far from anything to ignore and plenty have topped Bandcamp charts with some from acts that continuously do just that making it look as easy as breathing for them. Almost right from the beginning, Midnight Odyssey was a name to know in the scene and the one-man act has continued to hone his craft into something that’s truly worth listening to for any fan of the sound, and like a fine wine, he’s only gotten better with time. All of his works are staggering to say the least, and it’s with his forthcoming release that the trend continuously magnificently!
Many of the releases that we’ve seen from Midnight Odyssey have been amazingly long with the full-lengths in particular clocking over ninety minutes each with so much talent, color, intensity, and beauty packed within every single moment of those. This release, which holds the teasing title of “Part 1”, holds “only” 71 minutes of this mastery, but given the Part 1 part of it all, I’d suspect a follow-up sooner rather than later. But that has yet to be seen, and the main point of today is to talk about just how fucking awesome this effort is regardless of how fucking long it is! Should you expect anything less from Midnight Odyssey just because “Biolume Part 1 – In Tartarean Chains” is shorter than its predecessors then you are the perfect example of a damned fool because this work is nigh on intoxicating in every fucking possible manner you can think of when it comes to this particular style.
I absolutely adore seeing growth in any band no matter how inexperienced or talented they’ve shown us to be in the past as you can always improve in some area, and Midnight Odyssey has somehow taken his sound to a much bigger locale that feels much more like a humble beginning than an explosion of color and violent beauty that past Midnight Odyssey works have brought to the table. These seven tracks also feel like the most diverse that we’ve seen from this act ever with every track having multiple things to call its own with even the finale being a terrific display of Dis Pater’s simply amazing vocals that are gripping from beginning to end, and that’s not even talking about the immaculate instrumentation that’s on display for all of “In Tartarean Chains”. All of this effort is a tremendous experience that constantly ebbs and flows with the creation of this unique world that Midnight Odyssey yet again creates for us in all of its beauty as we’re treated to no less than god-tier atmospheric black metal that has been honed over the course of several years for it to get to this point, and I can’t imagine it being any more satisfying to listen to. Just having the privilege to soak yourself into “In Tartarean Chains” with a nice pair of headphones and drowning your whole being in this grand epic of destruction and rebirth is like very few others, and it’s only fitting that Midnight Odyssey should be the one to deliver it in all of its untouchable glory.
At some point, we’ve all read about a good myth that contains the destruction of the current world with the immediate rebirth of brighter dawn for all. It’s a pair that will exist even after the dawn of the next infinity, and they’ve long been entertaining for everyone. Never once did I suspect I’d see something comparable done justice within the world of metal, but Midnight Odyssey has brought such a vision to our souls with “In Tartarean Chains” such that even after laying in bed with nothing but some water and this glory playing in my headphones I still can’t get over just how astonishing this record is in its essence. Just the first track alone is worthy of applause, and it’s the rest that only further cements the genius behind Midnight Odyssey to great effect! “In Tartarean Chains” is undoubtedly one of the last great stops for the style for this decade we’re about to leave, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more beautiful.
