Space Coke – L’Appel du Vide

The vast majority of the time when I go to investigate and eventually listen to some psychedelic rock, I typically stay where things are still quite tame in comparison to the obvious deep end of the style as that’s something that I simply don’t get as much enjoyment out of despite occasionally liking what it has to offer. But sometimes you just need to take a dive and hope you find something good, and that’s precisely what I got with Space Coke’s upcoming record that’s the very epitome of rock dripping with psychedelia.

Usually, I feel like the extremely psychedelic material loses itself in sounding trippy and otherworldly and ignores having any sort of proper structure or flavorful rhythms in even the slightest form. It’s something that I’ve never had an affinity for, sadly, but it’s because of acts like Space Coke that provide the occasional delight from that far off dimension of rock. Right from the get-go, “L’Appel du Vide” shows us exactly what it’s all about as the only thing that isn’t constant across the ten tracks is theme as Space Coke beautifully carries the record with one riff after another across each track that truly makes this record an experience to let yourself fall into. The strings wreathed in fuzz, the vocals absolutely drenched in the psychedelic attitude and grooves, the beats that only hurl you further into the experience, and a tip-top level of musicianship all adorn “L’Appel du Vide” beautifully to make this entire album something that every fan of the style needs to experience. Space Coke really hit the nail on the head here for an act that previously really needed to stand out more, but they’ve done just that from ingenious execution to tasteful cover songs of both Velvet Underground and Stevie Wonder.

This album is a beautiful example of why I continue to occasionally go out of my comfort zone. Space Coke is a rare treat for someone like me, and I can’t help but give a thumbs up to the fuzzy glory of “L’Appel du Vide” as it is exactly something that if you love rock swimming in psychedelic and a true trip of untold proportions, you simply can’t go wrong here.
