The world of psychedelia is something that constantly evolving yet somehow still very much the same as it was back in the decade that’s typically renowned has the heyday of everything psychedelic in music: the 70s. Psychedelic rock, in particular, is something that has far too many forms for me to even think about sifting through that, but it’s with bands like Arcadian Child that we’re still getting that classic psychedelic feel while being steeped in a new age sound.
Whenever I think of modern psychedelic rock in its purest form in today’s climate I tend to think about acts like Suns of Thyme before any others simply because they channel the classic spirit of the style if not straight up copy and paste it and call it their own, but it fucking works above all else! So going into Arcadian Child’s upcoming record, I simply didn’t know how to approach the style of “Superfonica”, but in the end I kind of like it. The whole of this record really channels the classic feel of 70s psychedelia but Arcadian Child manages to expertly slip in some new age flavor to really make these eight tracks eclectic, flavorful, and a real fuzzy trip that’s delightful to simply lean back into and float away on. In the simplest form but in the broadest terms, “Superfonica” is an absolute joy to immerse yourself in as Arcadian Child seems to have created music for the soul as its euphoric and releasing at the same time while still being a real vessel of rock that we don’t get often but know all so well.
Arcadian Child has really hit a sweet spot with their fresh sound that’s incredibly difficult to hit, but “Superfonica” honestly feels like the first step towards genius as I can truly see this act creating something wildly spectacular in the future that will be all but unique. Psychedelic rock will always hold a special place in my heart despite me being quite picky about it, but I can’t help but give a thumbs to what Arcadian Child has done here and I truly hope this album gets the exposure and recognition it deserves.
