The small region of space rock that I’ve managed to explore has been quite a fruitful one with Black Space Riders easily being my favorite that I’ve come across, and I’ve always been excited to see what else the style could dish out. I never really thought what would happen if a band tried to emphasize the space over the rock without letting the rock become nonexistent, but it’s with La Morte Viene Dallo Spazio that I’m shown a new side of the style that I never thought could astound me like this.
The thing with many psychedelic styles from stoner doom to space rock is that many of us, especially myself, love drifting upon the ethereal waves in a cosmic ocean that the bands bring to us in all of their glory and fuzz. With La Morte Viene Dallo Spazio (in English meaning “Death Comes From the Outerspace), I was given a sampling of space rock that even treads upon the territory of ambiance in many ways and goes out of its way as the three tracks that make up “Sky Over Giza” tends to shift away from being what you’d come to expect from a typical band of the space rock style. Each track takes a slightly different course from the others be it a trippy intro that knows just how to lure the listener right into a trance, the middle where we’re actually treated to some rock that’s absolutely drenched in psychedelia with the combination of a theremin, flute, bass, guitar, sitar, moog, synths, and more to create a truly unique atmosphere, and a 12-minute finale where we drift among supernovas and through living planets. Time and again, “Sky Over Giza” delivers with either a riff or brand new layer of psychedelia that is all but tantalizing that allows La Morte Viene Dallo Spazio to truly stretch their muscles to give us a unique blend that blurs the line between space rock and ambient music, and it couldn’t be any more flavorful.
The more I get into space rock, the more I’m impressed by the bands that I discover. Even if the bands really tread the line that makes space rock what it is like La Morte Viene Dallo Spazio does, there’s little not to enjoy if you’re a fan of the style. “Sky Over Giza” gives us a beautifully detailed ambient experience mixed with rock that brings just enough of a punch to make La Morte Viene Dallo Spazio an act that should definitely not be underestimated.
