If you ask me, the world of progressive metal has become somewhat stale for an incredibly casual fan like myself. Simply, it’s because the style feels so… manufactured at this point. Sure, we get some enticing pieces every now and that then draw me in but they almost always seem to be gelled with death metal in some way. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen an almost unadulterated version of it, but Redemption has presented a record that’s a real treat and a breath of fresh air for someone like me.
Okay, so infusing prog metal with power metal may give it a kick that can be similar to molding it with death metal, but it’s a different kind of kick entirely. But, there’s something very flavorful and interesting about what Redemption has done here with this new offering that really manages to tickle my fancy while still able to stick to the roots of prog metal while also allowing the band to stand out amongst the rest just enough to not be boring. When diving into “Long Night’s Journey into Day”, I wasn’t really sure what to expect as I haven’t listened to Redemption since the release of their last album, but being able to head right into these eleven tracks and coming out with a solid response is still a real pleasure. Redemption doesn’t shy away from the trademark prog trait of dancing across the fretboard and bringing together infinite complex rhythms with impeccable musicianship backed up by the likes of excellent vocals and spot-on execution allows “Long Night’s Journey into Day” to breathe and become something that’s better than your typical prog album. Bring in the power metal elements and we’re given an explosive record that knows exactly when to pull its punches before pummeling us in the most satisfying ways, and Redemption knows exactly where to hit with each successful whallop.
It all culminates to let “Long Night’s Journey into Day” become something above to let the record stand out amongst the drool that modern prog can feel like so wearily often to people like myself. Redemption has come back to us with another satisfying piece to liven up our music lives just a little bit more.
