It’s not very often that a band can put out a second album and already be one of the new names to know of the scene. UADA definitely made one fucking hell of an impact with their debut album, but I never thought that this band would become the mini-phenomenon that they are now, but I highly approve! Their brand of black metal was something to behold, and it still is as their new record has made enough waves throughout all of metal for enough to call this record one of the best of the year so far.
Now, I’m not saying that I’m one of those people that are calling “Cult of a Dying Sun” one of the greatest pieces of black metal that 2018 is going to throw at us, but I can certainly understand why just from listening to the first track. The remainder of the album is a terrific display of power and genius the likes of which many black metal acts wish they could attain with the quality of this sophomore effort being a true force to be reckoned with. UADA made an impact with their explosive yet tempered take on the style with their debut, and that trend only continues, if not gets even better, with “Cult of a Dying Sun” as each track shows off a strength that this band has put on display before but it feels so much better and so much more satisfying this time around! The record grips your attention with an iron-clad fist before forcibly putting you through several layers of darkness that only UADA can guide us through, and they know exactly how to make it one engaging and fascinating journey. Each piece of “Cult of a Dying Sun” peels back a new layer behind the genius that UADA has in absolute spades to make everything from the scathing melodies to the delicious instrumental track to the eclipse-inducing vocals sound stellar from start to finish.
A sophomore effort more than not tends to act as another stepping stone to a band really trying to find their sound, but UADA found and perfected their sound on their debut so topping that with this effort is no less than an achievement they should be more than proud of. “Cult of a Dying Sun” is a fabulous and enticing display of black metal that feels so familiar but still quite different to make UADA stand out from the rest, as if the highest of quality material isn’t enough.
