Every now and then, a band rolls around that manages to capture the imagination of the masses in such a way that it’s truly remarkable to witness. King Buffalo did so with their last album, “Orion”, and they literally blew up in the world of heavy psych. A follow-up has been eagerly wanted from those who loved “Orion”, and they’ve been rewarded a delicious treat in the form of a three-track EP that’s, without doubt, a fitting follow-up.
I’ve heard whispers of this EP ever since its release at the beginning of the year, but I’ve been so stacked up with other business and albums to attend to that it’s always been on the back burner. Luckily, I made room for it tonight and I truly wish I sat down and listened to this mind-bending piece sooner. Where “Repeater” lacks in substance as it only has a mere three tracks to call its own, but King Buffalo easily makes up for it in sheer quality as this EP has got just about everything that makes heavy psych so delicious to begin with. We’re greeted by a 15-minute meditative piece that truly draws the mind in with seductive riffage and tasteful psychedelia (obviously) that King Buffalo has become renowned for. Then the remaining two tracks are simply masterpieces of what it means to create sonically pleasing music that is no less than real rollercoasters, and they truly allow “Repeater” to breathe as we’re not confined to the same sound for the EP’s entirety. It all comes together splendidly and King Buffalo shows, even more, their talent with their impeccable musicianship, and if anything this release wets my pallette even more for another full-length whenever that may come around.
I always find it interesting to see what an already established band can do with an EP as it can be a sign as to what they’ve got cooking in the studio, B-sides from previous work, or just a “fuck it why not” scenario. No matter which it is, I’m more than happy with what King Buffalo has created here with “Repeater” and I know I’m not the only one. Fingers crossed they’ve got something else coming soon.
