A constant theme that I’ve noticed when it comes to newer bands versus older bands is that many people prefer older groups. That’s understandable since those bands have been around longer, know what they’re doing (usually) and have had plenty of time to garner more fans. So, when a new group comes along that quickly gains fame and a devoted following, you know that band is doing something right. Rivers of Nihil is the best example of such for modern death metal, and their upcoming album is yet another marvel of the style.
If you’re familiar at all with Rivers of Nihil, you know that they don’t fuck around for even a second. “Monarchy” is still hailed as one of the most monumental albums to come from death metal ever since its release, and its predecessor, “Where the Owls Know My Name”, is everything fans could’ve wanted from the return of these greats. Straight from the incredibly detailed cover art, you know this album is something destined to be much more than just “good”. Whereas their debut embodied spring and “Monarchy” summer, “Where the Owls Know My Name” signifies fall. Many would expect the record to have a theme of death, but Rivers of Nihil uses it as an opportunity to allow autumn means rebirth. That shakes things up quite a bit and what ensues is easily the most engaging and accomplished album to date! “Where the Owls Know My Name” is a true rollercoaster of death metal as Rivers of Nihil truly takes things up a notch for this band and it’s the sort of thing that you can’t simply hear once. The whole of this record is immensely entertaining, and the clear upgrade from already awesome to staggeringly ridiculous is one that I can’t get enough of! Rivers of Nihil has long been a fan-favorite, and “Where the Owls Know My Name” is just the sort of thing people have been clamoring for and no one does it quite like Rivers of Nihil, making them a unique act for modern times.
Many people don’t listen to death metal because it’s not organic or engaging enough, and Rivers of Nihil is the perfect response to that! “Where the Owls Know My Name” is more than just a piece of art, but an experience of modern death metal and this album is destined to be hailed as such!
