History is absolutely rife with tragic tales and epic wonders that have since become lost to the ever-ravaging effects of time, but it doesn’t always remain lost as various medias prolong their unique sense of immortality. Music has long been something that wipes off the cobwebs of the past and brings them back to present day where we can bask in their glory. Some do it more grandiose than other, and it’s Towards Atlantis Lights with their debut that has done it in the most spectacular fashion I’ve seen yet.
For me, recounting days of old comes more often than not in the form of power metal (thank you, Sabaton) or even death metal (thank you, 1914) when it comes to music, but I’ve never really seen it done with doom metal to great lengths. Sure, we’ve gotten a few bits here and there like 1914’s latest split, but Towards Atlantis Lights is the first time we see doom taken to the extreme in spectacular fashion that wholly delivers. Straight out of the gate with a 30-minute opener, this band’s debut album could already stop there and call it a job well done. “Dust of Aeons” is more than complete with such an epic, but that’s just a piece of the puzzle for Towards Atlantis Lights as we’re treated to three more tracks of stunning majesty. The whole of “Dust of Aeons” is a beautifully organic album as each track has its own life force, energy, sound, pulse, and you can really feel the emotion being brought back from the grave to really make you feel like you’re actually there for these events. The raw emotion combined with brilliant atmosphere, tantalizing song structure, exquisite songwriting, immaculate execution, delicious variety amongst it all, and glorious infusion of different elements of metal into the mix allows “Dust of Aeons” to become a doom metal album that demands to be heard! Very rarely do albums of this kind come our way and this piece is the sort of shit that will surely resonate with listeners.
Towards Atlantis Lights is a new act, yes, but the combined experience of the musicians from other bands (Pantheist, Aphonic Threnody, Void of Silence) has enabled the creation of something that can’t be seen as anything less than fucking stupendous! From beginning to end, “Dust of Aeons” is the very definition of a spectacle and one that should undoubtedly be heard in one form or another for this album has more than enough for every type of doom fan, and I can only imagine Towards Atlantis Lights will be an act to know of in the future.
