For as long as death metal has been around, there have been bands that have simply been absolute titans of the entire genre. Many think of Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, or Death as bands that are essential to the genre, but, naturally, there’s much more that have been given their rightful cred. Incantation is easily one, and their 30+ years of smashing out death metal have proven them to be an unstoppable force. Coming up on the release of their tenth studio record, it’s obvious for me to say that they’re not slowing down, and this vicious record is all the proof one could need.
Many would say that Incantation isn’t “keeping with the times” and simply play a very old school sounding style because they can’t do anything else or only want to regurgitate the same stuff over and over again, but I would have to tell them to fuck off. Incantation has a formula that they have got an incredible grasp on that hasn’t faded since their early days on their path to becoming legends. And one can tell that they’ve no intentions on slowing down, and the upcoming opus of undeath and rotting flesh that is “Profane Nexus” is a marvelous testament to that. Incantation didn’t do a perfect job with this record, but no matter your taste or personal preference there’s no denying that “Profane Nexus” is a fucking monstrous album that can’t be denied along with its power. Eleven tracks made up of maggot filled carcasses and narrated by the reaper from another dark realm bring forth evil chants and unholy rituals to make “Profance Nexus” not only a killer album of death metal, but a dynamic experience that we simply don’t get with the genre a lot anymore, especially from a titan like Incantation. Not a single track sounds the same, one even clocks in just barely over a minute, and that really gives the record a fresh feel while still giving an ace repetition of the old school sound to where it really gives “Profance Nexus” a meaty texture that wraps up the record in an extremely gruesome yet satisfying way. And once you’re done with this glorious slab of undeath, you’ll be scrambling to hear it again because Incantation has fucking done it once again!
It’s not that big of a surprise that a band like Incantation can create something as brilliant as this for a tenth go at a studio record, but that doesn’t make it any less of a tasty record. No matter how many times you hear it, “Profane Nexus” is a more than worthy addition to the morbid discography that Incantation has already crafted over thirty years, and I can’t wait to see how else they’ll build upon its legend.
