Tchornobog – s/t

Every so often the underground will see a new single musician arrive. Just one man. That is what we call a mastermind, and in some rare instances, there’s no other word except mastermind to call the person behind the project in question. Yet, for Markov Soroka, one project isn’t enough. Creating underground gems such as Slow and Aureole were satisfying but they weren’t . . . evil. They weren’t the kind of music that chills your very soul and draws you in with dark, malicious hymns. That’s where Tchornobog comes into play.

There are but a few bands out there they the word “beast” perfectly encompasses, and that’s exactly what occurred with the eponymous record that spilled forth from a true genius of metal that’s exploring darker and much more menacing horizons with Tchornobog as his vessel. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to meditate in the desert where a great mountain holds the Mind’s Eye and looks upon the horrors that you yourself have wrought from the abyss of your mind? What about an album that takes in so many forms of extreme metal (predominately black, death, and doom) that then spews them forth in a sludge that infects all who simply gaze upon it? That’s what Tchornobog has done with this four-track album that clocks in over an hour of pure malice and psychedelic evil. I’ve never really gone through an experience that’s so in your face yet isn’t afraid to pull back from the chaos that’s still no less than evil the likes of which makes the most murderous psychopath seem paltry in comparison. Tchornobog really went somewhere with this debut, and it’s somewhere that’s intimidating with the harsh instruments that tell of your slow death, vocals that peel away at what little is left of your sanity, and execution that’s simply masterful in ever single way. We very rarely see a monster like this come out anymore, yet here in front of me I’ve something that’s astounding in so many ways, takes on the darkness for its own, and uses the bleak machinations of the human mind to throw you into a dimension that is horrifying to witness, but you can’t help but feel compelled to hear what the malicious voice in your mind has to say.
