Realistically, the last power metal album I really got into was Sabaton’s last record, and since then it’s been hard for me to get back into the style which is something that I’m not very happy about. I love to aesthetic, sound, and power (pun not intended) of the style, but I haven’t been able to find a piece able to reintroduce me to it all. That search for a gateway piece may have ended now that I’ve discovered Seven Kingdoms and their majestic blend of power and thrash.
Now, allow me to just say that this is far from the perfect fusion of power and thrash as throughout all of their upcoming record, “Decennium”, Seven Kingdoms didn’t really show much diversity or versatility in mixing up their sound to keep things fresh for the listener. However, given that the ten tracks of this album are of above average quality, the music was able to carry itself from solo to solo, from chorus to chorus, and so on. That being said, the brilliance behind Seven Kingdoms shows itself often enough to demonstrate the power behind the band. It’s tracks like “Undying” and “Hollow” that really carried the album as a whole for me, and even though the remaining tracks weren’t bad by any means they just didn’t feel sustainable if you were to extract them and put them all on their own. That does absolutely pose as a downer in the long run, but to call “Decennium” a failure of a record would be greatly disrespecting the talent and experience of Seven Kingdoms. This band has been a real heavy-weight in recent years as their power/thrash style set them apart from the rest, and that special flavor is one of the things that allows this album to survive in the end.
This is very likely the record that will get me back into power metal as a whole, and even though it’s far from being an immensely satisfying piece “Decennium” still holds its own in the end, and I find that applause worthy if nothing else. Every great journey has bumps in the road here and there, and I’m positive that a little bump such as this will keep Seven Kingdoms from shredding into greatness.
