I feel it’s always been safe to say that all types of metalheads appreciate a good dose of speed in their diets. No other style brings that in a richer flavor as much as thrash metal. Easily, thrash stands as one of the top styles of metal that can reach a level of edginess that metalheads live for. Yet, not every band can reach the high expectations. That being said, Warbringer is by far not an ordinary thrash band, and their upcoming record is the only proof anyone could ask for.
The last time a thrash album really, really impressed me was Dust Bolt’s “Mass Confusion” released last year that took me absolutely by fucking surprise, and I knew right there that piece was one of my favorites of the year, and it was. Since then, I’ve done my best to keep my poser eyes peeled for the next meaty slab of thrash that I’d come across, and today my wait has paid off with Warbringer! As one of the most lethal bands of all of modern thrash, “Woe to the Vanquished” stands as easily the best of its kind to come out in months! Pick any one song off this record and you will be treated to an elite serving of thrash that is utterly immaculate, crafted carefully by men who have a transcendent understanding of thrash itself. Everything about what Warbringer brings to the table is magnificent in “Woe to the Vanquished”! The theme of bloody war, the ever-persistent intensity brought in by the speed, and the riff-a-licious (is that a word? It is now!) rhythms that always keep you reeled into headbanging right along with the smashing anthems pumped out in every track. And if the sheer intensity of the first seven tracks of “Woe to the Vanquished” wasn’t good enough for you, then the finale, “When the Guns Fell Silent”, will easily gain your love as it is easily the highlight of the record, and it was also the song that made me realize how much an epitome of thrash this album is.
It’s not very often we see a piece of such uncompromising intensity and quality come our way, and I can promise you that the moment this record becomes available to the masses that it will instantly be recognized as a classic. Warbringer held nothing back in their fifth full-length record and set out to really show us what they’re made of, and they truly dropped an atomic bomb on us all as they endlessly impress! “Woe to the Vanquished” is a glorious ode to a renowned style that deserves more pieces like this and is the sampling that will allow Warbringer to attain the level of recognition that they so clearly deserve.
