Eruption – Cloaks of Oblivion

I find it to be extremely important for any band out there to draw influence from all over, otherwise, the resulting music will be either a simple cookie cutter or come off as completely uninspired. When it comes to thrash, old legends like Megadeth is a bountiful source of inspiration, but new acts like Panikk can be great resources as well. The Slovenian thrash band of Eruption clearly understands this, and you can feel generations of influence and glory in their new album.

As with all sorts of metal styles, there’s a practically infinite number of places you can look to for inspiration or fuel your creative drive. In the case of Eruption, I’d guess that these guys turned towards thrash legends when they first came into existence back in 2004, and their long journey as a band has led them to “Cloaks of Oblivion”; by far the best album that I’ve ever heard come out of Slovenia bar none. Everything about these nine pieces of brilliant thrash, even the more subdued intro, work together perfectly in order to create a thrash experience the likes of which we don’t see often. Last time I saw thrash of this quality was from the aforementioned Panikk, and although that wasn’t too long ago it still doesn’t take away the gravity of what magnificence “Cloaks of Oblivion” makes. This record brings together the traditional speed of thrash that has no sort of down time to really bring the power in every moment, and then it throws together vocals that vaguely remind me of Rob Halford to make give a classic feel to Eruption’s massive presence. If there were more riffs that really drew you in, then “Cloaks of Oblivion” would be an unstoppable force, but in its current form the record is still something to be reckoned with as this band brings the power, speed, and chaos that is essential for any thrash piece, and it’s done wondrously here.

Thrash has always been a style that I really enjoy, but for some reason never really keep up with it. Too many things to hear and it’s impossible to hear everything, unfortunately. However, I’m still extremely lucky that I’ve heard what Eruption have brought up from the depths of the Earth to bring yet another exemplary album that’s to be added to the growing list of incredible early releases of this year. “Cloaks of Oblivion” is an absolute must for any thrash fan, and has got to be experienced for anyone who wants to hear old school thrash with a modern touch.
