Saying you’d like to mesh a whole bunch of styles together to make something cohesive and not a giant fucking mess is one thing, but executing it is, of course, another thing entirely. Few have been able to do such, and those few tend to have a brilliant sound like no other. A newcomer to such group happens to be Unearthed Elf who did not once shy away from one of the many vastly unexplored areas of metal.
Bands the likes of Whispered and Inter Arma of whom I’m a massive fan of are but two examples of taking several different elements and smashing them together to create something that the world has done beheld before. It’s as if the man behind Unearthed Elf set out on a similar mission with his debut album, “Into the Catacomb Abyss”, and I can happily say that he succeeded amazingly well. Melding primarily doom and power metal is something that I think can safely be said has never really been done before for the most part, so Unearthed Elf really could’ve gone any direction he wanted to, but nonetheless the final product of “Into the Catacomb Abyss” is nothing short of a delicious treat. All ten tracks off of this magnificent debut take so many twists and turns that you never know what to expect on a first listen, and every single shift in tone and change of pace is simply something awesome to behold. There’s the crushing sound and slower pace that comes along with doom, albeit more friendly than say funeral doom, and then the themes, rhythms and even a little bit in the vocal department are things that can be attributed to the power metal portion of this strong concoction. And if mixing all these different sounds, elements, textures, and all that together
In its entirety, though, “Into the Catacomb Abyss” is by no means anything to scoff at for even a second, and shows that there is yet one more band that we should all be on the look out for in the future with such a talented debut. Unearthed Elf has proven that even one man alone has the capacity to pull off something no one anywhere has ever seen before, and the fact that it’s the fucking shit . . . it makes me pretty excited to see what else the man behind the curtains can do, I tell you what.
