I’m at the point with power metal where you’re most likely going to need more than a simple super-melodic factor to rope me into your charade. You need something that you don’t hear in every other band be it a unique theme or melding it with another style of metal. Charred Walls of the Damned is an excellent example of the latter and all we’re gonna need proof is their upcoming album which needs a label stating “you’re gonna see some serious shit” (in a good way).
If you were to mix together power and thrash metal you wouldn’t exactly be labeled as a genius who’s thinking outside the box or anything of the kind, but you’d definitely have more to prove than if you were to perform straight power metal. Charred Walls of the Damned have taken up such a challenge time and again, and while they’ve never, in my pointless opinion, put out a bad album it is “Creatures Watching Over the Dead” that is easily their crowning achievement. This isn’t a very lengthy record with but a third of the songs reaching over four minutes, but that doesn’t seem to matter as Charred Walls of the Damned bring this energy that burrows down into your mental state – your soul – and after the second or third song (or hell maybe even the first one) you can feel it clicking with your being itself. That’s something not many bands can do on your first listen through the album, but it came so naturally with “Creatures Watching Over the Dead” that I can’t help but applaud it. Everything about the album is also done magnificently well from the flow of the silky smooth vocals, lightning speed of the guitars and bass, and awesome beat of the drums to create this epic nine track mesh of power and thrash to create something that I simply cannot help but approve of one million percent.
This is utterly one of those albums that could stand on its own amongst both the power and thrash highlights of the year because it’s got the most perfect balance that you could possibly want from such a combination. “Creatures Watching Over the Dead” will unfortunately go largely unnoticed, I’ve got a gut feeling about it, and that truly is a goddamn shame as Charred Walls of the Damned proved their genius with this album and has the potential to show the world what they’re really made of.
