Sometimes you just find yourself in a bad mood, and you want the music you’re blaring to reflect your mood. I’m no stranger to such, and oddly enough I’ve been in a pretty negative mood recently for the usual various reasons, so I needed something truly brutal and seething with rage but also new to allow me to release some energy. In come Kingdom to save the goddamn day with their onslaught of bloody death metal that I can only regard as an excellent combination of gore and majesty in one roll.
Allow me to just say two things: (1) no, my mood has not been so bad recently to where I’d be as aggressive and brutal as this album is, and (2) I do not practice any form of Satanism or whatever you wanna call what can be found within this record is. But everything about “Sepulchral Psalms from the Abyss of Torment”, apart from being a fucking mouth full, is the epitome of what one could want out of a death metal album that pulls absolutely no punches. I’ve a good feeling that’s what Kingdom set out to do for this record, and holy shit did they achieve it in an amazingly glorious way. The cover art itself, while magnificent in every right, is but a small taste of what you could find in the piece itself. The guttural vocals that screech their way up from Hell, the doldrums that bring torrents of death and massacre that are the drums, the apocalyptic boom that shakes all walls of the Earth and shatters every cross that is the combination of guitars and drums – it’s all fucking there in massive excess to boot! And that’s not even mentioning the overflowing amounts of gore, the pulsing rage that seeps out of every thrum of the guitar strings, and cursed chants that you hear throughout these simply relentless eight tracks. In its essence this is the most guttural straight death metal album I can almost guarantee you’ll come across all year, and also having an excellent sound, naturally.
You can’t be excellent without being able to stand out from the crowd, and goddamn does “Sepulchral Psalms from the Abyss of Torment” stand the fuck out! Kingdom prove with seven original genius alongside a great Darkthrone cover that they aren’t anything to fuck with in any way, and that they’ve got the right death metal formula all bands of their kind want but they’ve prove they can pull it off to give us something truly awesome as a result.
