The idea of Canadian black metal is not that hard of a concept to grasp as black metal tends to come out of the countries with more colder environments and a lot of bleakness depending on your view. And if you’re one of those people familiar with the Canadian black metal scene, the name of Forteresse should instantly ring a bell. If you’ve never heard of these guys before, you’re fucking missing out, I’ll tell you what, and this new album is magnificent proof as to why.
“Thèmes pour la Rébellion” is without a doubt Forteresse’s crowning achievement as the entirety of this record is an epic display of black metal the likes of which cannot be beat if you’re any kind of fan for the genre you’ll find an absolute multitude of things to enjoy with this album. Now, if you’re an elitist or an elitist in denial you probably won’t enjoy this record because it’s not just the sound but everything that is more modern and innovative, but deep within the music you can taste the original fire that Forteresse still gladly carry in their works, and it shines ever so brightly with “Thèmes pour la Rébellion”. Symphonic elements peak in and out of the fiery bursts of black metal that Forteresse pull off so well, and that gives this record an amazing contrast between two polar opposite sounds to really give you an experience that few bands are able to successfully pull off with this clearly being one. Nothing is spared with “Thèmes pour la Rébellion” from the name of the album itself to the harsh intensity of the vocals that in the end are presented to us in the form of a masterfully crafted album the likes of which we rarely ever get to see, and anyone who experiences it will know they’ve heard something truly out of this world.
The cold of Canada has once again not disappointed as it has yet again produced a great piece of a great genre that is simply applause worthy to say in the least. Forteresse prove with their newest piece that they are the definite kings of Canadian black metal, and they aren’t showing any signs of giving up their thrones any time soon.
