You know how you have a secret list of bands that you’ve been meaning to check out but never ever do? One band for my own list happens to be Otep with how I’ve always heard good things, but just never gotten around to listening to them. So I took a leap of faith with “Generation Doom” and in the end I can happily say that not only did I enjoy this record, but now I have to sit down and listen to a lot more Otep.
Any album with 12 tracks on it is bound to have a menagerie of different shit to listen to, right? Sadly, that’s not always the case but with “Generation Doom” there is an absolute fuck down of different styles, sounds, and all that good stuff done wondrously well as Otep really flexes their muscles by not holding anything back on the record. I was not aware that Otep was a female fronted one so for me that was a very welcome surprise and even more so when I found how great they are at not only singing but the growls and screams are pulled off excellently so that throughout the album you can find plenty of serene and aggressive parts to really get your fill for differing styles. But as Otep has been known for, this record is just all over metal sub-genre board as there’s just a little bit of so many different styles of metal rolled into “Generation Doom” from nu metal to symphonic to just about whatever else you can imagine in one form or another. Sick hooks from the masterful guitars, fiery rhythms bursting from the bass, an electric pulse from the beat of the drums, and of course an energy that ranges from raw to soothing from the vocals all come together to form “Generation Doom” which, if Otep fans live up to their name, will not be a disappoint for anyone who is looking forward to this piece. I can just about guarantee every single fan that, and that’s not something I say often.
There’s so much packed into this album that’s it’s very hard to pick it apart and really dissect it because when you break everything down you have an overwhelmingly large amount of awesomeness to sift through, and that’s one of many reasons I thoroughly enjoyed “Generation Doom”. A dynamic and truly explosive album that’s awesome to the very core, Otep have created a piece that is surely one of the most. . . . unique and interesting records that I’ve had the pleasure of hearing in quite some time, and I think you’ll find the same to be true when you check the album out.
