Affliction Gate – Dying Alone

a3080533440_10 After seeing that cover and the album title I was thinking that Affliction Gate, whom I’ve never heard of before a month ago, was depressive black metal. Holy mother of all things unholy was I wrong! Affliction Gate is, for anyone else who didn’t know, is arguably the band that is the closest to old school death metal that we are going to get in today’s metal scene. Now, so many other bands out there say “we’re the real deal old school death”, but rarely do they meet up to that statement and occasionally fall flat on their faces, but Affliction Gate manages to rise above the rest as their upcoming EP “Dying Alone” shows to me that Affliction Gate is one of those bands that show up once in every one thousand bands (disclaimer: numbers not proven accurate) where they prove that they mean business. Four tracks is all that “Dying Alone” has and it’s far more than enough to show the talent that Affliction Gate has in such a great quantity that it’s staggering to say in the very least. This French quintet manages to blend together a voice that sounds like the bellowing of a man sentenced to death as he’s stranded from a bottomless pit (very specific!) alongside a mix of dual guitars, bass, and drums that are the doldrums of the gruesome demise of said poor bastard. To top it all off, Affliction Gate manage to achieve what I like to call restrained brutality. What is “restrained brutality” you may ask? Basically, that’s when the music is undoubtedly brutal to begin with but the band will then put in periodic bursts of even more brutality that make the song much more savory as you cannot help but look forward to the next burst because the last was oh so perfect. That’s the phrase I’d have to go with for “Dying Alone”, too; oh so perfect. And even though Affliction Gate has this beast coming out on the 6th of January of 2016, I will say with full certainty that “Dying Alone” will absolutely be one of the most intense, raw, and overall well done album of next year. A bold statement, yes, but I never say something like that without full confidence that it is true. If you don’t believe me, that’s just fine, but you’re missing out and anyone who will be fortunate enough to hear “Dying Alone” will know what I’m talking about.

“Dying Alone” comes out January 5th, 2016!
