I’ve never thought of the wonder that could come out of combining folk metal with atmospheric black metal before because it sounds so different to me that I never thought someone would have the balls to attempt it, but Downfall of Nur have done just that they’ve done it in such a way that I cannot even begin to fathom! “Umbras de Barbagia” is more atmospheric in the beginning than anything with instruments such as guitars, the flute, and even a fucking bagpipe being used in the second track, which is 17 minutes, and all of them create a truly one of a kind sound that I’ve never heard before. The following tracks pick up the pace with more black metal in them with blistering vocals whose lyrics I won’t even try to begin to decipher, but of course there are periods where everything comes to a screeching halt and in comes the folk and atmospheric part once more to give you an awesome sound for all 5 tracks. This entire album is an experience that you truly have to hear to believe because this is masterfully crafted and it’s one of those albums that could have me stuck in my chair for hours if I let it, and the whole thing is over an hour long so think about that.
